Shafts of sunlight fall across the path, cobwebbed with the shadows of branches; peer through the gaps between the trees, and you’ll catch glimpses of the hazy blue mountain peaks beyond. My curiosity piqued by miniature shrines that dot the pathways—featuring faded paintings of the stations of the cross—I continue the pilgrimage through an expansive glade, and along a winding route that leads me up a steep hill. Over the ridge, the spire of a tiny chapel rears its head. Merely a few meters wide by a few meters long, the almost comically idyllic space includes stained glass windows, painted ceilings, and a wall covered in drawings and paintings of the Virgin Mary left by past worshippers. As the only person at the top of this small peak, with that magical kind of quiet that comes only with the sound-absorbing hush of freshly fallen snow, it’s hard not to feel at least a little spiritual.

And for those feeling especially plucky, there’s an outdoor Finnish sauna with a giant tub for cold plunging afterwards, refilled by a wooden tube plugged straight into the side of the mountain to release its glacial waters.
