A lift is adorned with illustrations of native flora, while a hallway is covered in colorful geometric murals by Brazilian street artist Caligrapixo. World-renowned artist Vik Muniz did the stained glass windows of Saint Lucia in the on-site chapel, which was first built in 1922. Virgilio Neto, known for his intricate drawings, scrawled all over the rooftop foyer, telling imagined stories about the historical Brazilian billionaire Count Matarazzo. Even the champagne glasses are works of art, etched with Jean Cocteau sketches from Allard’s private collection. Overall, the hotel has a gobsmacking 450 pieces of artwork ingrained into its very being. “What is really interesting and fascinating in Brazil is the bursts of joy, the enthusiasm,” says Starck. “There is an extraordinary mass of creativity, a tremendous creative impulsion there.”
